Tips for moving from the virtual to the real world

This is a short post.

It’s short because it’s about spending less time on digital devices.

It’s written in response to a parent’s request for some insight into how to get kids off digital, into the real world and doing so without immeasurable grief.

Does this sound familiar?

Most parents of young children can relate to this scenario: their zombie progeny zoned out in front of a screen — then the tussles and tantrums that result when they take the device away. Transitions from one activity to another can be tough for little kids, but the move away from digital devices is often another level of excruciating.*

How can you reduce the tantrum incidence?

  1. Make a plan to do something fun when screen time is over such as a little treat or a visit to the park.

  2. Create a reward chart so kids get a sticker when they shut down the device without a freak out.

  3. Do not try to end their time if they’re in the middle of a game. Give them a little time to complete it then move on.
