How to make a better world with kids
If you could make a better world with your kids, would you?
We think you would.
Of course there’s many ways to make a better world together.
But how can we approach teaching our kids perspective, helping them understand the concepts of entitlement and privilege and especially how to be kinder towards themselves, each other and the world?
“Do your little bit of good where you are; it’s those little bits of good put together that overwhelm the world.” Desmond Tutu
Even small steps like turning off the lights when you leave a room, or smiling at a stranger, or saying thank you, can make an impact and create a ripple effect.
Yet after these difficult times of isolation and online digital immersion, how do we help our kids (and ourselves) regain empathy and kindness?
There’s no doubt, these little humans we love so much and would do anything for, can be challenging.
Think of how many times you’ve sat down for a meal and reminded your kids how fortunate they are to have food on the table and a roof over their head.
Or how many times you’ve invited your kids to think of others first and be kind to the planet.
It kind of feels like pushing water up a hill with a rake sometimes.
What if we shared a vision of making a better world?
What if we shared a vision of making a better world with your kids as active participants and gave you simple strategies you could apply immediately?
Our purpose here at Walden International School beyond offering a superior academic and IB programme to our children is to help every child discover that out of goodness arises greatness.
When you walk through the doorway to our school you enter an environment dedicated to making good people.
You might well ask what we mean by making good people.
It means creating an environment and programmes built on a firm belief in our shared humanity.
It means teaching children that the world is about much more than the achievement of high marks and the accomplishment of standardized goals.
It means recognizing each child as an individual with their own needs, interests, talents and abilities.
It means showing them how kindness, respect and presence are central to a meaningful, purposeful life.
It means starting with the youngest child and staying the course throughout their time with us and empowering them to practice humanity when they leave our care.
That is our commitment.
Find the extraordinary in the ordinary.
And now, we’re taking our commitment beyond the walls of the school by offering you a free gift: 6 Ways To Make A Better World With Your Kids.
We’ve taken a look at many of the programmes we deliver at Walden and packaged them up so you can adapt them to your own personal situation - whether you have kids or not.
For example, at our school we encourage the kids to go outside to play even when it’s raining. It’s just one of the ways we help them find the extraordinary in the ordinary.
We’ve woven wellness and mindful meditation into our daily activities. We encourage and model deep listening to be fully present with children. We sit with them, show them they have our full attention.
This is something you can incorporate at home everyday.
Focus on what really matters.
We envision a future where we can all focus on what really matters and as we emerge from the pandemic making a commitment that we won’t return to what we previously defined as ‘normal’.
We’re on a mission to empower you to overcome barriers and to recognize and seize opportunities where others might see obstacles. As Jon Kabat-Zinn writes, “You can’t control the waves but you can learn to surf.”
Our free guide features practical exercises that have been tested on hundreds of kids. One of our favourite practices is expressing gratitude. People who regularly practice gratitude experience more positive emotions, feel more alive and sleep better.
Together, we can do this.
Together, we can absolutely influence change for good that will infuse generations with a commitment to goodness.
And, the great thing is this - we can lead and be lead by our kids.
