The Art of Belonging
Why Walden feels like home from day one
During a recent staff meeting, we asked our teachers a simple question: What is one thing you hope our students experience at Walden this year?
As their answers came in, one word kept resurfacing across pairs and departments: belonging.
Long before the first morning bell rings, our educators are already thinking about how to create a space where every student feels seen, valued, and safe. But true belonging does not happen by accident, nor does it happen by asking kids to fit into a rigid mould.
There is a profound difference between fitting in and truly belonging, and our teachers play an active role in cultivating that difference every day.
Fitting in vs. belonging
To understand the difference, imagine a puzzle.
When you try to fit in, you constantly adjust your shape. You might change what you wear, how you speak, or how you express yourself just to slide into a group without making waves. Fitting in requires constant effort and self-monitoring.
Belonging is the exact opposite. Belonging means walking through the door as your authentic self, quirks and all, and having your teachers and peers say, “We are so glad you are here.” You do not have to change your shape.
That feeling happens from day one because our teachers intentionally design classrooms where individual identity is celebrated rather than smoothed over.
The missing piece: mutual belonging
True community is rooted in mutual belonging, the understanding that we share a common story and genuinely care for one another. Loving your own community does not mean excluding others; much like a family, it simply means having a deep, intentional commitment to the people under your roof.
In larger institutions, the focus is naturally on managing standard systems for thousands of students. At Walden, because we are smaller and designed with intent, we have the space to focus heavily on relationships. We have the flexibility to notice when someone is having an off day and the time to celebrate what makes each student unique.
You belong here
When students don’t have to waste energy worrying about fitting in, something remarkable happens. Their anxiety drops. They stop self-protecting and start creating, inquiring, and growing.
